China’s athletes continued their impressive performance at the 2025 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Summer World University Games in Essen, Germany, clinching two more gold medals on Thursday.
In table tennis, Zhao Shang showcased exceptional skill and composure, defeating Huang Yu-jie of Chinese Taipei in straight games (11-8, 11-9, 13-11, 11-5) to claim the women’s singles title.
Zhao displayed remarkable control throughout the match. After a tight beginning in the first game, tied at 4-4, she powered ahead with a five-point streak, securing an 11-8 win. The second game remained neck-and-neck until Zhao capitalized on two critical errors from Huang to take it 11-9.
The third game was a thrilling contest, with neither player leading by more than three points. Tied at 11-11, Zhao seized the moment, winning two consecutive points to extend her lead. She dominated the fourth game 11-5, sealing her victory and earning the gold medal.
Over in Bochum, China’s Shu Heng soared to success in the men’s long jump. Shu claimed gold with a remarkable leap of 8.09 meters, marking a significant improvement from his fourth-place finish with 7.82 meters at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu.
After a slow start in his first three attempts, Shu found his rhythm in the fourth round, breaking the eight-meter mark with a jump of 8.07 meters to take the lead. He later secured his top spot with his best jump of the day at 8.09 meters. Japan’s Koki Fujihara took silver with 8.00 meters, while Germany’s Luka Herden earned bronze with 7.96 meters.
These victories boost China’s medal tally, placing them second in the overall standings with 21 gold, 21 silver, and seven bronze medals.
