UN Chief Applauds China-EU Pledge to Boost Climate Cooperation Ahead of COP30

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has applauded China and the European Union’s commitment to strengthen their collaboration on combating climate change. This pledge comes as the world gears up for the pivotal COP30 climate summit in Brazil.

“As two of the world’s largest economies, it is critical that China and the European Union continue to work together to ensure that COP30 represents a major turning point in the global effort to address the climate crisis,” Guterres said in a statement released on Thursday.

The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of global cooperation, especially among leading economies, to achieve meaningful progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He reiterated his call for all G20 countries to present updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2035.

Guterres urged these NDCs to be economy-wide, covering all emissions, aligning with the ambitious 1.5-degree Celsius goal set by the Paris Agreement. He also stressed the need for a credible pathway to transition away from fossil fuels, in line with agreements made at the First Global Stocktake.

The enhanced cooperation between China and the EU signals a strengthened commitment to tackling climate change and supporting a just global transition to sustainable energy sources.

“Young people around the world are demanding bold action on climate change,” Guterres added. “It’s time for all nations to rise to the challenge and create a greener, more sustainable future for all.”

The upcoming COP30 summit in Brazil is seen as a crucial opportunity for nations to accelerate their climate ambitions and implement strategies that will safeguard the planet for future generations.
