Carlos Alcaraz bounced back brilliantly at the ATP Finals with an impressive straight-sets victory over Andrey Rublev on Wednesday, winning 6-3, 7-6 (10/8) in Turin. The 20-year-old world number three showcased his resilience after struggling with fatigue and illness earlier in the week.
Following a disappointing opening match loss to Casper Ruud, concerns arose about Alcaraz’s fitness. His coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, revealed that Alcaraz had experienced breathing difficulties, casting doubt over his participation. But the young Spaniard overcame these challenges, delivering a thrilling performance that kept his semifinal hopes alive.
Alcaraz dominated the first set, breaking Rublev in the seventh game and riding the momentum to close out the set in just 38 minutes. The second set turned into a nail-biter, with both players dazzling the crowd with spectacular shots. Alcaraz saved two set points in the tiebreak before clinching the match with a stunning winner.
“Andrey is a tough opponent, and I’m happy with how I played today,” Alcaraz said after the match. “I feel better physically, and I’m looking forward to the next challenge.”
Rublev, who has now lost six consecutive matches at the ATP Finals, fought valiantly but ultimately couldn’t turn the tide. Sitting at the bottom of the John Newcombe Group, his chances of advancing are slipping away.
In the evening match, Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated Casper Ruud 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, taking a significant step toward the semifinals with his second group-stage victory. The two-time ATP Finals champion seized control in the first set tiebreak and maintained his dominance, breaking Ruud in the second set to secure the win.
Zverev’s commanding performance means he can eliminate Alcaraz in their upcoming showdown on Friday. “It’s always great to be back competing at this level,” Zverev said. “I’m pleased with my game and eager for the next match.”
Meanwhile, Ruud will face Rublev, needing a win to keep his semifinal dreams alive. The stakes are high as the ATP Finals heat up, with the world’s best battling for the prestigious year-end title.
