Report Highlights Chinas Ocean Vision Global Cooperation

China Unveils Vision for Sustainable Oceans, Urges Global Cooperation

Shanghai, June 8, 2025 — Marking the 17th World Oceans Day, China unveiled a groundbreaking report on Sunday outlining its vision for sustainable ocean development and calling for enhanced global cooperation.

The report, titled “A Maritime Community with a Shared Future and Sustainable Ocean Development – Joint Actions of China and Its Global Partners“, proposes advancing ocean sustainability through four key dimensions: technological innovation, rule-making cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and maritime security.

This significant publication is a key outcome of the 2025 Shanghai Forum for a Maritime Community with a Shared Future. It was jointly developed by over 200 representatives from government agencies, maritime enterprises, academic institutions, and think tanks.

“This year marks the sixth anniversary of the proposal to build a maritime community with a shared future,” said Chu Beiping, president of Shanghai Maritime University. “China’s vision offers new perspectives for global cooperation amid growing maritime challenges.”

Awni Behnam, honorary president of the International Ocean Institute, shared his thoughts in a video address. “The launch of this report is a contribution to shaping a maritime community with a shared future and a testament to the enduring spirit of multilateral cooperation in the ocean domain,” he said. “This comes at a moment of reflection and action closely aligned with the spirit of World Oceans Day.”

Experts and representatives from over 20 countries gathered at the event to discuss global ocean governance and sustainability. They emphasized that the report demonstrates China’s strong commitment to international cooperation and could contribute valuable insights to the upcoming UN Ocean Conference 2025. Many expressed hope for a broader global consensus on marine protection and sustainable use.

“China’s shipping industry not only supports its own growth but also helps drive the global economy,” said Rizka Ardya, a representative of Frontier Logistics Indonesia. “It plays a vital role in stabilizing supply chains and promoting shared development.”

The report’s release highlights the increasing importance of international collaboration in addressing ocean-related challenges such as climate change, pollution, and overfishing. By focusing on innovation and shared responsibility, China aims to work with global partners to ensure the health and sustainability of the world’s oceans for future generations.
