Scientists Worldwide Urge Immediate Action to Save Our Oceans

Scientists Worldwide Urge Immediate Action to Save Our Oceans

From June 3 to 6, over 2,000 scientists from around the world gathered in Nice, France, for the One Ocean Science Congress. They released 10 urgent recommendations, calling on United Nations members to take decisive action to protect the oceans—our planet’s lifeblood.

The recommendations are a roadmap to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, highlighting the ocean’s role in providing solutions. Key proposals include:

  • Promoting Ocean Knowledge: Encourage education and awareness about the ocean’s importance.
  • Equitable Climate Solutions: Ensure ocean-based climate solutions are safe and fair for all.
  • Protecting Ecosystems: Restore and safeguard marine and coastal habitats.
  • Deep-Sea Sustainability: Pause harmful activities on the seabed and study the deep sea responsibly.
  • Sharing Benefits Fairly: Equitably distribute benefits from marine genetic resources.
  • Combat Illegal Fishing: End unregulated fishing and increase transparency.
  • Sustainable Food Systems: Build safe and equitable ocean-based food sources.
  • Eliminate Plastic Pollution: Stop the flow of plastics into the ocean.
  • Reduce Shipping Emissions: Cut carbon emissions from maritime transport.
  • Invest in Ocean Research: Support interdisciplinary studies for ocean action.

Francois Houllier, CEO of Ifremer and co-chair of the congress, emphasized the need for immediate steps. “Now is the time for action. The global scientific community is dedicated to expanding our knowledge to help the ocean thrive,” he said.

This congress sets the stage for the upcoming 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). The aim is to bring science-based insights and policies to international leaders, urging them to prioritize ocean health—a matter that affects every person on the planet, especially young people who will inherit the consequences of today’s decisions.
