China’s Divers Claim Second Gold at 2025 World University Games

China’s diving pair, Ou Yangyu and Wang Weiying, secured their country’s second gold medal after a stellar performance in the women’s synchronized three-meter springboard final at the 2025 Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Summer World University Games in Berlin, Germany, on Friday.

The competition saw 11 pairs vying for the top spot. Ou and Wang led narrowly over a German duo by 1.2 points after the first two rounds. Despite an error in the third round that earned them 60.30 points, the Chinese duo maintained their lead. They bounced back in the fourth round, extending their advantage to over 15 points. In the final round, they delivered a competition-high score of 71.10 points, clinching the gold medal. An American duo took silver, while a German pair earned bronze.

In the men’s three-meter springboard final, China’s Hu Yukang narrowly missed the gold, finishing behind Germany’s Moritz Wesemann despite a strong final dive of 72.15 points. Hu’s teammate, Zhang Wen’ao, finished seventh.

On the swimming front, China’s Ai Yanhan and Liu Shuhan advanced to the women’s 100-meter freestyle final after strong performances in the semifinals. The duo previously contributed to China’s silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay on Thursday.

South Africa’s Pieter Coetze set a new World University Games record in the men’s 100-meter backstroke semifinals with a time of 52.18 seconds. In the women’s 200-meter backstroke final, the USA’s Leah Shackley broke another event record to claim the gold medal.

In fencing, individual neutral athlete Dmitrii Shvelidze defeated Hungary’s Soma Somody 15-11 to win the men’s epee individual gold medal. Italy’s Aurora Grandis clinched the women’s foil title with a 15-11 victory over South Korea’s Mo Byeoli.
