ECB Chief Christine Lagarde Warns Tariff Threats Fuel Global Economic Uncertainty

Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), has cautioned that ongoing tariff threats are fueling uncertainty in the global economy. In an exclusive interview with CGTN’s Guan Xin, Lagarde emphasized that such tensions are causing investment and development projects to stall, dampening growth expectations worldwide.

“Tariff threats create a shadow over global economic prospects,” Lagarde stated. “Businesses are hesitant to invest when the future is unclear, and this hesitation can slow down economic progress.”

The ECB Chief highlighted that the ripple effects of trade tensions are felt globally, especially in developing regions. “Emerging economies are particularly vulnerable,” she explained. “They rely heavily on stable international trade relationships to foster growth and development.”

Lagarde called for cooperation among nations to alleviate these uncertainties. “It’s crucial for governments to engage in constructive dialogue,” she said. “By working together, we can create a more predictable environment that benefits everyone.”

The interview comes amid ongoing global trade disputes that have seen major economies imposing tariffs on each other’s goods. These actions have raised concerns about a potential slowdown in global trade and economic growth.

Lagarde’s remarks underscore the importance of resolving trade conflicts to ensure economic stability. “We must prioritize policies that promote openness and collaboration,” she concluded. “Our shared prosperity depends on it.”
