Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski held a phone conversation on Monday, during which both sides vowed to safeguard the international order established after World War II.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China’s willingness to maintain high-level exchanges with Poland and expand practical cooperation in various fields. He noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations (UN).
“China is ready to work with Poland to uphold the UN’s core position and safeguard international law and fundamental norms governing international relations,” Wang said.
He highlighted that the return of Taiwan to China is a victorious outcome of WWII and an integral part of the post-war international order. Wang expressed hope that Poland will continue to adhere to the one-China policy and oppose any form of “Taiwan independence.”
As this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU), Wang stated that China expects Poland to play a constructive role in promoting greater progress in China-EU ties.
Sikorski affirmed Poland’s commitment to the one-China policy and expressed a desire to strengthen exchanges with China at all levels. He emphasized Poland’s dedication to deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, safeguarding the post-WWII international order, and advancing Poland-China and EU-China relations.
The two ministers also discussed the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Wang reiterated China’s commitment to promoting peace talks and mentioned the initiation of the “Friends of Peace” group with countries from the Global South.
“We hope all parties will further demonstrate their willingness to resolve the crisis through political means and ultimately reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace deal through continued dialogue,” Wang stated, noting that recent direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are a positive first step.
Sikorski expressed Poland’s hope that China will continue to play an active role in promoting enduring peace in Europe.
