China and Turkmenistan Leaders Meet to Boost Belt and Road Cooperation

China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, met with Turkmenistan’s National Assembly Chairperson, Dunyagozel Gulmanova, in Beijing on Thursday. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two nations, especially aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Turkmenistan’s strategy to revive the Great Silk Road.

Zhao emphasized China’s willingness to deepen collaboration in connectivity, agriculture, culture, tourism, and education. He highlighted the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership earlier this year when President Xi Jinping and President Serdar Berdimuhamedov met in January.

“China highly appreciates Turkmenistan’s firm support on issues related to Taiwan, Xinjiang, and human rights,” Zhao said. “We are committed to supporting Turkmenistan’s national independence, sovereignty, and security, and respect its policy of permanent neutrality.”

He also called for both countries to promote the implementation of the global initiatives proposed by President Xi, safeguard the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, and practice true multilateralism.

Gulmanova expressed her country’s enthusiasm for the growing partnership. “Under the strategic guidance of our leaders, the comprehensive strategic partnership has flourished in politics, economy, diplomacy, and culture,” she said. “The National Assembly of Turkmenistan is eager to deepen friendly exchanges with China’s National People’s Congress, enhancing communication among special committees, young parliamentarians, and representatives.”

The meeting signifies a commitment to further enhance cooperation and strengthen the bonds between China and Turkmenistan.
