Kazakhstan Leads as China’s Top Central Asian Trading Partner

Kazakhstan has emerged as China’s leading trading partner in Central Asia, strengthening economic ties between the two nations. In 2024, Kazakhstan accounted for 46 percent of China’s regional trade with the region, reaching a total volume of $43.8 billion.

The significant rise in trade underscores the deepening relationship between China and Central Asia. This partnership has fostered mutual growth and opened new avenues for cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy, and technology.

The first China-Central Asia Summit, held in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, from May 18 to 19, 2023, marked a milestone in regional collaboration. Leaders from China and Central Asian countries convened to discuss shared goals and initiatives.

Building on the success of the inaugural summit, the second summit is scheduled to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from June 16 to 18, 2025. The upcoming event aims to further enhance partnerships and explore new opportunities for development and cultural exchange.

The growing economic ties between China and Kazakhstan not only benefit both nations but also contribute to the stability and prosperity of the entire Central Asian region. As the partnership continues to flourish, it sets a promising example of regional cooperation in the Global South.
