China’s Foreign Ministry has called on the international community to intensify efforts to ease escalating tensions in the Middle East, following reports of a potential closure of the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, emphasized on Monday the importance of the Persian Gulf and its neighboring waters as vital international routes for trade and energy supplies. “Maintaining security and stability in the region aligns with the common interests of the international community,” Guo stated.
The appeal comes in response to reports that Iran’s parliament voted on Sunday in favor of closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, though the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council. The move is seen as a reaction to rising tensions with the United States.
The potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes, has raised global concerns. China, as a major importer of Middle Eastern oil, has a vested interest in the stability of the region.
“We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions through dialogue,” Guo added. “The international community should work together to safeguard the safety of international waterways and ensure the uninterrupted flow of trade.”
The ongoing tensions highlight the fragile nature of relations in the Middle East and the ripple effects that conflicts can have on global economies and security.
