Chengdu, the vibrant capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, is counting down the days to the 31st Summer World University Games, set to take place from August 7 to 17.
Breaking from tradition, the organizing committee has chosen the open area of the Tianfu International Convention Center for the opening ceremony, embracing simplicity and the city’s unique charm.
“We used an existing building for an opening ceremony in an open area,” said Huang Peiling, deputy chief director of the opening and closing ceremonies. “Some spectators will sit on the grassland outside to watch the ceremony. I think that fits Chengdu’s characteristic.”
The convention center, which began construction in June 2020 and was put into use in 2021, was not built specifically for the Games but is a part of the city’s development. The opening ceremony will feature a 15-minute artistic performance within a 90-minute show, with rehearsals already underway since June.
As the Games approach, excitement is building among locals and participants alike. The choice of venue reflects Chengdu’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, promising an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
