At the 3rd China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) this Wednesday, an important new report was released that’s set to change how we think about global supply chains. The Global Supply Chain Promotion Report 2025, hosted by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), highlights how cutting-edge technology and green innovations are transforming the way products move around the world.
“Technological innovation is playing a bigger role than ever in driving global supply chains,” said Zhao Ping, spokesperson for the CCPIT. “Digital tech like artificial intelligence is evolving fast, and green technologies like carbon capture are being adopted at a rapid pace. These trends are pushing global supply chains into a new era of digitalization and green development.”
So, what does this mean? Imagine the journey of products like drones, AR glasses, or even soybeans. The report maps out how these 17 key products move from production to your hands, showing the entire upstream, midstream, and downstream processes.
The Chinese mainland is playing a big part in this transformation. By improving infrastructure, opening up to global cooperation, and enhancing financial services for supply chains, it is bringing more certainty to a world that’s often unpredictable.
This year’s report also introduced a new index matrix to make sense of these changes. It includes four indices: promotion, connectivity, innovation, and resilience. Using 2018 as a starting point with a value of 1, each index has grown by 2024. The promotion index shot up to 2.71, connectivity to 1.56, innovation to 2.16, and resilience to 1.22.
“While all the indices are improving, supply chain resilience is still relatively fragile,” Zhao pointed out. “We need everyone to work together to boost the development environment, connectivity, and innovation to truly strengthen global supply chain resilience.”
For young people in the Global South, these trends mean new opportunities. As technology and green development reshape global trade, there’s a chance to get involved, drive innovation, and contribute to a more sustainable and connected world.
