China Swelters Under Record-Breaking Heatwaves During Flood Season
Right now, China is sizzling under an intense heatwave that’s breaking all kinds of records. Since the flood season began, temperatures have been soaring higher and staying hot longer than anyone expected.
The National Climate Center reports that people across the country have faced an average of 8.5 hot days—more than any other year during this time. “We’re seeing the second-highest average temperatures on record,” said Jia Xiaolong, deputy head of the center.
Forty-five national weather stations have recorded their hottest days ever. In Xingping, a city in Shaanxi Province, the thermometer hit a blistering 43.1 degrees Celsius!
This extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a health risk. On July 2, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration and the China Meteorological Administration issued a high-temperature health risk warning for the first time ever. That’s a big deal, showing just how serious the situation is.
China is taking action. The country has made adapting to climate change a top priority. Last year, it released a national plan to build early warning systems for health risks related to climate. This means they’ll be better prepared for events like this in the future.
Dealing with sweltering heat during the flood season is a tough challenge. But with new plans and warnings in place, China is working hard to protect everyone and keep them safe during these extreme weather events.
