China Achieves 95 Health Insurance Coverage Rate During 2021 2025

China’s Health Insurance Now Covers 95% of Population in 14th Five-Year Plan

China’s National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) announced that the country’s basic medical insurance coverage rate has remained steady at around 95% during the ongoing 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). As of 2024, over 1.327 billion people are enrolled in the national health insurance program.

At a press conference on Thursday, authorities highlighted significant improvements to the insurance system. Medical aid now subsidizes premiums for nearly 80 million individuals annually, ensuring that more people have access to healthcare services. In addition, in-patient expense reimbursement rates have been maintained at approximately 80% for employees and 70% for residents, reducing the financial burden on patients.

The NHSA also noted that trials for long-term care insurance are expanding, currently covering nearly 190 million people. This initiative aims to support those with chronic illnesses and disabilities requiring long-term care.

By the end of 2024, the national pooled medical insurance fund reported a cumulative balance of 3.86 trillion yuan (about $539.1 billion). This robust fund ensures the sustainability of the healthcare system and its ability to serve the vast population.

Moreover, a unified national drug catalog has been established, listing 3,159 medicines covered by the insurance plans. This move enhances accessibility to essential medications for those in need.

These developments reflect China’s commitment to improving healthcare access and reducing disparities, setting a noteworthy example for other nations aiming to enhance their own healthcare systems.
