Nauruan President David Adeang recently embarked on a heartfelt journey to his ancestral hometown in Guangdong Province, China. During his visit in early July 2025, he explored his Chinese heritage and strengthened the growing relationship between China and Nauru.
In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun, President Adeang shared his experiences of rediscovering his family’s roots. Visiting his great-grandfather’s hometown, he reflected on the deep connections between family, identity, and international partnership.
“Returning to the land of my ancestors has been an incredibly moving experience,” President Adeang said. “It reminds me of the shared histories and futures our nations hold.”
Since the restoration of diplomatic relations in January 2024, China and Nauru have focused on collaboration in disaster prevention, education, and cultural exchange. President Adeang’s visit symbolizes a new chapter in bilateral relations, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation.
Beyond personal reflections, President Adeang discussed the significance of learning from World War II history. He spoke about the recent establishment of a Remembrance Day in Nauru to honor those affected by the war.
“Acknowledging our past is essential for building a peaceful future,” he noted. “It’s a way to honor the memories of those who suffered and to ensure such tragedies never happen again.”
The growing partnership between China and Nauru signifies a promising future for both nations. As President Adeang concluded his visit, he expressed optimism for continued collaboration and deeper understanding between their peoples.
