In a significant diplomatic meeting, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday in Berlin. The two leaders pledged to uphold openness and mutual benefit, promote fair trade, and work together to address global crises and challenges.
Chancellor Scholz highlighted the positive development of Germany-China relations, emphasizing sustained progress in cooperation across various fields including politics, economy, and trade. "Strengthening our partnership serves the interests of both countries," Scholz stated, reaffirming Germany’s adherence to the one-China policy.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that President Xi Jinping and Chancellor Scholz had recently engaged in an important phone conversation. "This dialogue has provided strategic guidance and political assurance for the development of our bilateral relations," Wang Yi said.
"China-Germany ties are mature and stable, not targeted at or dependent on any third party," Wang Yi added, highlighting the strong internal momentum and high degree of stability in their relationship. He praised Germany’s constructive and pragmatic approach to advancing bilateral ties and expressed China’s readiness to maintain close high-level exchanges.
"This cooperation will not only serve the interests of both countries but also contribute to the well-being of Europe and the broader international community," Wang Yi emphasized. He expressed confidence that Germany will continue to take a positive view of China’s development and adhere to a rational and pragmatic policy towards China.
Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to building a new system for a higher-level open economy. "Our door to the world will only open wider," he said, adding that China is ready to share its market opportunities with Germany and jointly create new prospects for development.
During the talks, the two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and agreed to maintain strategic communication to promote a peaceful resolution.
