China’s National Swimming Championships continued in Shenzhen on Wednesday, showcasing a stellar performance from 20-year-old Pan Zhanle. The men’s 100m freestyle world record holder clinched his fifth gold medal of the week, adding to his growing collection.
Starting strong from lane three, Pan seized the lead right from the start and never looked back, touching the wall first with an impressive time of 47.77 seconds. This victory adds to his earlier golds in the 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 4×100m freestyle relay, and mixed 4×100m medley relay.
In other events, Tokyo Olympics champion Wang Shun dominated the men’s 200m individual medley. Competing in lane four, the Zhejiang native faced little competition as he surged ahead, winning the final with a time of 1 minute, 56.58 seconds. Xie Yichen of Zhejiang finished second, followed by Chen Nuo of Shanghai.
On the women’s side, Hebei’s Yu Zidi delivered a remarkable performance in the 200m butterfly. After setting a personal best in the semifinals, Yu propelled herself to gold, improving her time to 2 minutes, 6.83 seconds. Fellow Hebei swimmer Ma Yonghui placed second, while Chongqing’s Gong Zhenqi secured third place.
The championships also saw exciting finishes in the women’s 50m backstroke, where Jiangxi’s Wan Letian claimed gold with a time of 27.56 seconds. Zhejiang’s Lu Xingchen and Qian Xin’an took silver and bronze, respectively.
In the women’s 4×200m freestyle relay, Zhejiang outpaced Hebei to claim gold. Fifteen-year-old Yan Tiaoshan gave Zhejiang an early lead, but Hebei’s Li Bingjie turned the tide, establishing a three-second cushion after 600 meters. Zhejiang’s Liu Yaxin staged a remarkable comeback in the final 200 meters, regaining the lead and anchoring her team to victory in 7 minutes, 50.20 seconds.
