French Police Launch Investigation into Social Media Platform X

French police have opened an investigation into social media platform X, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced on Friday. The platform is accused of “impairing the operation of an automated data processing system by an organized group” and “fraudulently extracting data from an automated data processing system by an organized group,” according to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

The case has been assigned to the Directorate-General of the National Gendarmerie (DGGN). In January, the cybercrime unit received two formal complaints—one from a member of the French parliament and another from a senior official at a public institution. Both alleged that X’s algorithm was exploited for the purpose of foreign interference.

In February, authorities confirmed they were examining these complaints. The official investigation was launched after verifying information from French researchers and various public institutions.

This development highlights growing concerns over data security and the potential influence of social media platforms on national affairs.
