China and Africa Celebrate Deepening Ties at Africa Day in Beijing

China and Africa Strengthen Bonds at Africa Day Celebration in Beijing

The 2023 Africa Day celebration in Beijing brought together African ambassadors to China, Chinese officials, scholars, and cultural representatives on Saturday. The event highlighted the deepening friendship and cooperation between China and African nations, emphasizing a shared commitment to global equity, inclusion, and mutual understanding.

Expanding Africa’s Global Voice

Rahmat Allah Mohamed Osman, the Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to China, expressed gratitude for China’s support in advocating for the AU’s membership in the G20. He noted, “China was the first country to explicitly support the African Union’s inclusion in the G20, helping to expand Africa’s voice on the global stage.”

A Vision for Mutual Growth

Martin Mpana, Ambassador of the Republic of Cameroon to China and Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps in China, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “We need a world open to all, for all, by all—not by some to decide for others to obey,” he said. “We are happy that China and Africa are building not only a long-lasting friendship but also win-win cooperation.”

Ambassador Mpana highlighted the parallels between China’s development and the aspirations of African countries. “China’s modernization is a result of the people’s decision,” he remarked. “In Africa, we can do the same. Though we don’t have the same political systems, the goal is to bring leaders to understand that people’s lives matter… and this will certainly bring modernization to Africa.”

Opportunities for Economic Development

Hodan Osman Abdi, Ambassador of Somalia to China, shared insights on advancing Africa’s modernization through strong ties with Beijing. “China has been setting the stage for win-win cooperation where economic development is mutually reinforced,” she said. “China is setting up opportunities for African enterprises, companies, and products to find their markets here in China.”

A Commitment to Justice and Inclusion

The theme of this year’s Africa Day, as designated by the AU, is “Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” The celebration in Beijing reinforced the commitment of both China and African nations to work together towards shared goals and to foster a more inclusive and just global community.
