Ben Healy, the 24-year-old Irish cyclist, soared to victory in Stage 6 of the Tour de France on Thursday after an impressive solo breakaway. His triumph marks his first stage win at cycling’s most prestigious race.
“A stage win in the Tour is just unbelievable; it’s what I’ve worked for,” Healy expressed with excitement. “I grew up watching the Tour and wishing one day I could just be there. Participating is already an achievement, but to win a stage is just so, so amazing.”
American rider Quinn Simmons secured second place, finishing two minutes and 44 seconds behind Healy. Australian cyclist Michael Storer claimed third, crossing the line seven seconds after Simmons.
In a thrilling twist, Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel reclaimed the coveted yellow jersey from defending champion Tadej Pogacar by a mere one-second margin. Van der Poel finished eighth in the stage, while Pogacar came in ninth.
“I would have loved to have a bit more than one second, but I’m happy to have it again,” van der Poel remarked. “I’ll try my best to recover as good as possible and then we’ll see tomorrow, but first I’m going to enjoy the yellow jersey. I will probably only have it for one day.”
Stage 6 spanned 201.5 kilometers, taking riders from Bayeux to Vire Normandie. The hilly route featured six minor climbs and culminated in a demanding uphill finish with a steep 10% gradient. The heat added an extra layer of challenge, with van der Poel admitting he struggled with the high temperatures.
Spectators were on the edge of their seats as Slovenia’s Pogacar made a late acceleration, attempting to maintain his hold on the yellow jersey. However, his efforts weren’t enough to outpace van der Poel’s overall timing.
Two-time Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard finished tenth, just behind Pogacar, and currently sits fifth in the overall standings.
As the race intensifies, all eyes are on the upcoming stages to see who will emerge as the frontrunner in this year’s Tour de France.
