Wang Ziying Makes History with Wheelchair Singles Title at Wimbledon

London, England — Wang Ziying has etched her name into the history books by becoming the first wheelchair player from the Chinese mainland to claim a singles title at Wimbledon. The No. 4 seed delivered a stellar performance on Saturday, defeating top-seeded Yui Kamiji of Japan 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s singles wheelchair final at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

In a match that showcased her resilience and determination, Wang overcame her opponent who had previously dominated their encounters, winning eight out of nine matches. Kamiji, a ten-time Grand Slam champion, was aiming to complete a career Grand Slam with a victory at Wimbledon.

The first set was a nail-biter, with Wang needing five set points to secure it as the ninth game extended to nine deuces. Demonstrating composure and focus, she capitalized on her first match point in the second set to seal her maiden Grand Slam victory.

Wang’s aggressive play was evident as she struck an impressive 55 winners during the match. Following her triumph, she shared a heartfelt embrace with her doubles partner, Li Xiaohui. The duo is set to compete for the women’s doubles title against Angelica Bernal of Colombia and Ksenia Chasteau of France on Sunday.

Wang’s historic win not only marks a personal milestone but also represents a significant achievement for wheelchair tennis in the Chinese mainland, inspiring many young athletes across the region.
