Beijing Guoan moved closer to the summit of the Chinese Super League (CSL) after a crucial 2-1 victory over Changchun Yatai at home on Saturday. The win, coupled with unexpected losses by the top two teams, has set the stage for an exciting title race.
Guoan capitalized early when Changchun’s goalkeeper, Wu Yake, mistakenly passed the ball straight to Zhang Xizhe just outside the box in the 17th minute. Zhang wasted no time and slotted the ball home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Just seven minutes later, Fabio Abreu seized possession in Changchun’s half and quickly set up Cao Yongjing, who doubled the advantage for Beijing. Despite a late goal from Changchun’s Tan Long in the 88th minute, assisted by He Yiran, Guoan held on for their eighth win of the season, remaining undefeated after 13 matches.
With 29 points and a game in hand, Beijing Guoan are now just one point behind second-placed Chengdu Rongcheng and three points shy of leaders Shanghai Shenhua.
Shenhua and Rongcheng Suffer Setbacks
In a surprising turn of events, both Shanghai Shenhua and Chengdu Rongcheng were defeated in their respective matches.
Shanghai Shenhua fell 3-1 to Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. Although Andre Luis gave Shenhua the lead in the 28th minute, Shenzhen’s Zhang Yudong equalized in the 36th minute with a stunning long-range effort. Early in the second half, Zhang Yujie headed in a cross from Edu Garcia to put Shenzhen ahead. Garcia later assisted Rade Dugalic in stoppage time to secure the victory.
Meanwhile, Chengdu Rongcheng were edged out 3-2 by Henan in a thrilling encounter. Rongcheng’s Wei Shihao opened the scoring in the 8th minute, but Henan quickly responded with a penalty from Felippe Cardoso after Huang Zichang was fouled. Despite Rongcheng regaining the lead through Felipe Silva, Henan fought back with goals from Huang and a decisive header by Frank Acheampong in the 69th minute.
Title Race Heats Up
Beijing Guoan now have a golden opportunity to ascend to the top of the CSL standings. They will host Qingdao West Coast on Tuesday, and a victory would see them overtake Shanghai Shenhua on goal difference.
The race for the title is tighter than ever, promising thrilling matches ahead for football fans across the region.
